Confidence Clinics

Helping Nervous Pets Feel Safe, One Step at a Time

We understand that some pets find visiting the veterinary practice stressful or frightening. Our Nurse-Led Confidence Clinics are designed to help pets build positive associations with the practice environment, making future visits less stressful for everyone involved.

Whether your pet is worried about travelling in the car, walking into reception, stepping on the scales, or being examined, our experienced veterinary nurses will work with you to create a personalised plan that progresses at a pace your pet is comfortable with.

What Are Confidence Clinics?

Confidence Clinics use proven behavioural techniques, including:

  • Systematic desensitisation – gently and gradually introducing your pet to situations they find worrying.
  • Counter-conditioning – pairing those situations with positive experiences such as treats, toys, praise, and play.

The aim is to help your pet develop confidence and reduce fear, anxiety, and stress associated with veterinary visits.

What Happens During an Appointment?

Every pet is different, so every appointment is tailored to their individual needs.

Early visits may involve simply:

  • Travelling to the practice
  • Walking through the car park
  • Spending time in reception
  • Stepping onto the scales
  • Entering a consultation room

While this may seem like very little is happening, these positive experiences are often the most important steps in building confidence.

As your pet becomes more comfortable, we can gradually introduce:

  • Gentle handling
  • Listening to the heart
  • Microchip checks
  • Paw and nail handling
  • Other procedures specific to your pet’s needs

What Can Owners Expect?

Building confidence takes time and patience.

Most pets will require several visits, and progress may be gradual. Our goal is never to push a pet beyond what they can comfortably cope with. A negative experience can set progress back significantly, so we always work at your pet’s pace.

We also encourage owners to bring:

  • Favourite treats
  • Favourite toys
  • Any items that help their pet feel relaxed

Is My Pet Suitable?

Confidence Clinics can benefit pets who:

  • Are nervous at the vets
  • Show signs of fear, anxiety, or stress during visits
  • Dislike handling or examinations
  • Have had a previous negative veterinary experience
  • Become worried around other animals or unfamiliar environments

If you’re unsure whether your pet would benefit, please contact our team who will be happy to advise.
